Many other symptoms and conditions correlate with exposure to environmental hazards!  A synergistic combination of hazards also may cause or exacerbate certain symptoms.  

A few other examples:

• Exposure to radon can raise the risk of certain types of lung cancer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Academy of Medicine. 
• Exposure to high levels of lead has been linked to neurological damage, according to the EPA.  Exposure to high levels of lead also has been linked to anemia, weakness, kidney damage, and brain damage, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
• Various types of contaminants affect Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).  One type, Volatile Organic Compounds, can cause eye/nose/throat irritation, liver damage, and cancer, according to the EPA.

Some conditions may have been misdiagnosed with a cause rooted in previously unknown exposure to a particular hazard.  For example, according to the EPA, low-level exposure to carbon monoxide may cause headaches, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms.   Because there are so many potential causes of each of those symptoms, in some cases a physician or a patient may incorrectly attribute such symptoms to stress or to a flu variant.  

If exposure to a given hazard continues because it hasn't been detected, adverse health risks or symptoms may increase;  a misdiagnosis can lead to ineffective or problematic therapies.  

Discovering environmental hazards that could be root causes or aggravators may help clients and their healthcare providers determine more appropriate therapeutic care plans.
